For this body of work, entitled “Hailee”, I photographed my 11 year old niece in scenes which exemplified qualities of the “perfect woman”. In the United States, these qualities include being beautiful, smart, sexy, able to cook and clean, all while still being pure and innocent. I created this portfolio to illustrate the pressures women feel to be all of these things, and to show how these ideals are being instilled in girls’ minds from a very young age…

I've always been supportive of equality and the desire to end pointless oppression be it skin color, sexual preference or gender. However over the years I've found that the people I've meet who stood against these things were in some way a part of it. It may have been simply my misunderstanding but I've been accused of being racist simply because i am white, sexist because I am male and gay for every reason under

There’s quite a spectrum to how much people actually know about the underlying forces of oppression and inequality, and it’s up to you to evaluate what each person is saying. Some people do go about it in either a very aggressive, hateful, or ignorant manner. But individuals don’t represent everyone, and we shouldn’t ever assume we know the group by a “handful of people we’ve met”.

On the other hand, we can’t be too sensitive, either. Someone who is simply critical of my style of antiracism or feminism or robustness-for-all-humanism is not inherently being racist or sexist by distrusting me on those grounds.

Does this get at your question at all? In short, figure out what it is that you can and can’t learn from people — especially when they’ve had experiences you probably haven’t.

First ever domestic abuse ad in Saudi Arabia. I lived in Saudi Arabia once and agree with Redditor ofthreesteps that it’s going to take more than a clever ad to change the culture in the country. Still, change is happening there, however slowly: a Saudi prince recently made a public case for allowing women to drive (though mainly for economic reasons…).

'What the Hell!': Steubenville High School Football Coach Gets a Two-Year Contract Extension | The Nation:

Perhaps the most disturbing feature of the Steubenville High School rape trial involving several members of the school’s storied football team wasn’t the crime itself as much as everything that surrounded it. It was the 50 people who stood around and did nothing while an unconsious young woman was being carried around like a slab of beef. It was the adults in authority who seemed all too eager to push this under the rug until photos were displayed for the world to see and the justice system was shamed to act. It was those who threatened the life of the young woman for daring to press charges, requiring armed guards outside her family’s home.

Symbolic of this unholy marriage of jock culture and rape culture was the revered Big Red football coach Reno Saccoccia who didn’t seem to give a damn that his players could have treated a woman this way. Given Coach Saccoccia’s controversial behavior before and during the trial, which drew national scrutiny, many of us thought he at the very least would be shown the door after three decades of service. We all thought wrong. Today we learned that “Coach Sac”, as he is known, has been granted a two-year contract extension by the Steubenville school board. They made this decision despite the fact that a grand jury is meeting next week to assess whether he and others obstructed justice in the case. Saccoccia was legally required to report the sexual assault as soon as he was aware it took place. The grand jury will determine whether or not he in fact knew and tried to sweep it under the turf.
